If I thought coming up with the list I shared with you last week was hard work, trying to find and buy everything on it under budget is even harder–and so far the challenge has very little to do with being busty because my focus has primarily been on accessories. Last week I got down to business searching for less expensive alternatives to the Alice Alan shoes (I didn’t find any) and the C. Wonder necklace (I did, and I share them below).
First, the shoes. As you may recall, I need a pair of black heels to wear with dresses. I began with a store in Manhattan called Eneslow that has a great selection of “comfort” shoes, which I need for my orthotics and weak ankles. Here’s a pair from Beautifeel that fits my foot perfectly and is perfectly comfortable right out of the box. Price: $335.
I have finally learned how to approach the salesmen at specialty boutiques that sell shoes like these. I tell them that I will only be trying shoes on that day, and I will think about what I like and discuss it with my husband before deciding to buy. What a much better shopping experience I had as a result–none of the usual salesman-pleasing angst that I usually feel. After Eneslow, I also visited Aerosoles and the new giant Macys shoe department, but since I didn’t find what I needed at either of those stores, I’m now searching for ways to increase the shoe portion of my clothing budget.
Fortunately, the necklace hasn’t been as big of a challenge. I took Leah’s advice in the comments and explored the wholesale bead stores on Sixth Avenue in Manhattan. Amazing! When I’m ready for giant turquoise beads and golden glass pearls, I am going back.
For a simple gold necklace, however, I ended up finding two Jones New York necklaces at Macys, each for $38. I may return one of them but can’t decide which!
Finally, I must return the great Ann Taylor squiggle dress that I ordered. I do not want to return this extremely flattering dress–I felt good about myself every time I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror, and a random saleswoman even complimented me on it. But I have a confession to make: I wore it with the tags still attached on Friday, and at the end of the day, I discovered that where my shoulder bag hit my hips, the fabric had already begun pilling. This, ladies, is a busty-specific problem. Knit dresses are a busty woman’s friend, but knits pill. I have accepted the inevitability of this fabric trait, but for the squiggle dress already to look old after only seven hours???
Fortunately, I found a replacement for the squiggle dress AT MY LOCAL THRIFT SHOP. It’s not as fun, but for only $16.99, I won’t be heartbroken when it begins to pill. This Suzi Chin for Maggie Boutique dress has the added bonus of being known as “The Dress” on Corporette because it is universally flattering and appropriate. I think I may have found an equivalent for the navy sheath dress on my list.
You can read all about the pros and cons of this dress in the over 330 reviews on the Nordstrom website. In order to make this dress work for me, I will need to shorten it. I would also like to figure out how to smooth down the lumpy side zipper. The last thing I need to make this dress work? The Beautifeel shoes at the beginning of this post!
I love your advice about approaching shopping with the specific goal of trying on, not buying, and being very upfront with the salesperson about that. I get angst in stores too! Being upfront would really relieve that angst. Your new dress is lovely!
Let me know how this works for you. Usually I know I can fall back on returns when I give in to sales pressure, but stores like Eneslow and Harry’s Shoes only give store credit. That’s what really helped me stay strong!
I haven’t tried this personally bc I don’t wear heels. But a friend of mine swears by buying dancing shoes for cute and comfy heels. She has a ton of foot problems, she claims it is dancing shoes or having them custom-made. To make the dancing shoes suitable for wearing on the street she has a professional attach different soles. This route might be a good alternative to the shoes above. I think you might be able to find some decent dancing shoes for 80-150 USD, attaching other soles will probably set you back 20-50 USD.
I second dance shoes as being supportive. I can’t fit my orthotics in most (mine are hard plastic, thick, and extend past my arch, the foam sort could possibly fit) but they have a thick enough heel and enough shoe structure for my joints. My favorite brand is Aris Allen (I usually get them through DanceStore.com) since they have a good heel and a nice footbed. I haven’t bothered resoling the pairs that come with suede soles, occasionally they will collect leaves but a quick shuffle will solve that, I’m just too lazy to find a good cobbler near me. My last physical therapist was even content with them (except for the 3″ ones I got for my wedding but I ended up not wearing them anyway).
The lumpy side zipper might be the result of poor application (inadvertently stretching the fabric when applying the zipper). Your alterations seamstress could assess whether removing the zipper and then re-applying (this time with stabilizing the zipper area with interfacing first) would fix the problem. Another possible solution is to remove the zipper entirely (you would just have a plain seam on that side of the dress, rather than having a seam with a zipper). That would work only if the cut and fit are such that you can put the dress on and take it off without a zipper.
Have you tried Miz Mooz shoes? http://www.zappos.com/miz-mooz-women-flats/CK_XARC11wFSAuEawAEB4gIEGAECCg.zso
If I ever decide to spend more than $10 on a pair of shoes (I thrift all of mine, I’m weird) I’m going for these. So many people rave about how comfortable their heels are, but they make flats as well. Lots of cute basics.

I, too need comfortable dress shoes-I have RA and my feet are too difficult to fit. I have never tried Beautifeel because of the price but I see the discount online and that they also come in wides! hmmm
Thanks for all the shoe advice, ladies! I’m definitely going to check them out. I also stopped by EasySpirit & found these yesterday: http://www.easyspirit.com/Rebelle/53924201,default,pd.html?variantSizeClass=&variantColor=JJH09E3&cgid=50438757&prefn1=catalog-id&prefv1=easyspirit-catalog
I haven’t tried them w/ my orthotics yet, but they didn’t hurt in the store, so that was a good sign.
And Judy, I really appreciate your tips on how to deal w/ the zipper. I actually slipped the dress over my head in the store, so I may just remove the zipper entirely.
