Let it go, let it go . . . .
So goes the refrain from the movie Frozen, and it’s the song in my head as I’ve been decluttering my home this year. Have you heard of Marie Kondo’s book? Her slim best-selling volume promises to change your life if you follow its dictum, and it’s true.
It really is life changing and magic and all good things rolled into one brilliant technique for deciding what to keep and what to purge.
Does it spark joy?
Yes = keep.
No = toss.
Week after week, bags and boxes of clothes we won’t wear, shoes I no longer need, books and household goods we haven’t picked up since the 90’s have been headed out the door, to the thrift store if usable and to the trash if not. But I’ve set aside some nice pieces from for the upcoming SWAP.
Have you RSVP’d yet?
Two years ago, when headed to my first SWAP, I was certain there would be nothing for me to take home. I’m used to being sooooo busty that I’m sporting the largest breasts in the room. There was the promise of my custom made Campell & Kate shirt that was ready for pick-up, so I was certain not to leave entirely empty handed, but I didn’t expect to find goodies in the SWAP. I could not have been more wrong. There were lots of things for all sizes, including for me–someone who wears at or above the top range of Pepperberry & BiuBiu.
Both times, I’ve come away with some clothing goodies. But more than that, I’ve come away with so much more. It’s a fun afternoon with a diverse bunch of women sharing clothes, style tips & ideas. Please join us if you can.
Great post Patsy!
I think I’m going to get that book, sounds very interesting an if it helped you, I hope it will help me as well 🙂
From my experience, I find easier to “let it go” when someone else who is not involved help me. I’m very sentimental and I like to keep things that has a special meaning for me but sometimes I like to do an “inventory” and try to discard things. I learned a good way to do it is to take a photo of that special thing and just keep the memory with the photo, it will take less space.
A special way to clear the space and feel so good is giving to someone in need something that already helped me, I remember donating the clothes that I wore to a job interview -and landed in a great job experience-to someone looking for a job. Not only I was giving my clothes but also all that good energy hoping it will help someone else.
One great quote I learned said when we open our hands to give, we are also ready to receive and for own experience, it’s so true!
I agree with your experience at the SWAP. Last year when I went to NY I didn’t expect to come back home to Florida with such nice memories, some goodies and not only Bolero made some sales to the friendly busty ladies but the Big Apple left me with the taste of a Sweet Big Apple 🙂
Man, I keep hearing about that book. I really need to read it! I am obsessed with decluttering, but still seem to have too much stuff (even though I’m constantly filling up donation bags!)
I’m so excited to attend the swap this year. I’ve been so discouraged while clothes shopping and sick of interpreting size charts online, I can’t wait to “shop” somewhere where I’m sure to find clothing made with a bust in mind!
Also, thank you for the new take on Let It Go. My 2yo sings it all the time….and a new interpretation for me will keep me sane. Haha!
