I’ve spent the last 2 weeks avoiding my everyday underwires because it’s time to wash them again. The main deterrant has been forgetting which of the 3 different washes goes with which bra for my bra washing experiment. This morning, I finally looked it up.
Perhaps you, like me, have always wondered the best way to squeeze extra water from underwire bras before hanging them to dry. I’ve always been warned against wringing them out, but I confess that I cheat a little bit. I gather whatever I can at the end of the underwire and give it a little squeeze. Of course it’s still dripping wet afterwards, so my current solution is to wrap it in a towel like this: I keep going the length of the towel until it’s folded flat around the bra and then give it a couple of firm pats. If I’m in a hurry, I hang it to dry right away. If I have extra time, I’ll leave it in the towel a little while longer to soak up as much extra water as possible.
So far, this has been my best solution. My bras are dry when I need to wear them the next day. I haven’t risked washing them in the morning when I need to wear them that night, however.
Please share your techniques for drying underwires!
sure thing on the shirts darlene. but i must confess, i have a bunch of underwire bras i haven’t washed in months. i refuse! i am trying to find cleaners that will clean them for me. i don’t do handwashing, it literally irritates the skin on my hands, gloves or not. it turns the palms red and itchy. so what’s a girl to do?
It sounds like for you, the detergent you use on your lingerie needs to be as gentle as the soap you use on your body. Even though the specialty lingerie washes I’m using are supposed to be gentle, I don’t think they pass that test. If you can find someone else that you trust to handwash your underwires, you’ve really scored. But a cheaper and faster approach would be the one I learned from Orchard Corset–wear your bras into the shower with you. Soap them up with your shampoo or body soap, rinse them off, and go from there. Even if shampoo or body soap isn’t intended for fabric, it’s one way to decrease the effects of sweat on the fabric so that your bras can last longer. In the meantime, if I hear of a hypoallergenic lingerie wash, I’ll be sure to let you know!
I wash my bras with liquid dish detergent. At least rinsing bras is a good idea to remove sweat and some oils.
There's a rinse-free wash designed for wool that's gentle–Eucalan, available with or without eucalyptus.
