After CURVE last year, a group of bloggers gathered to share a meal, drinks and plenty of opinions. A topic that kept coming up is the whole idea of what “nude” as a color really means. As a black woman I know that for me and most of my family, nude has always referred to a strange beige-like color that makes us look like we need lotion. Being lighter complected, I have been able to find a couple “nude” bras that somewhat match my naked skin. However, women with darker skin have been, for the most part, completely out of luck.
Enter Nubian Skin . . . A Different Kind of Nude
I had the pleasure of meeting the founder of Nubian Skin, Ade Hassan at CURVE this year and fell in love with the lush shades of brown her brand offers. There are currently 3 styles of bras offered, 4 styles of panties, hold ups and tights. I was even drawn to the names they chose to describe these beautiful hues . . . Berry, Cinnamon, Caramel and Cafe’ au Lait. To make it easier when ordering online, they even included lists of popular foundations commonly worn by women of each color group. What a nice touch!
Unfortunately, the bras only available in 30-36 B-DD with 38-40 B-DD set for an April 2015 release but Ms. Hassan told Darlene and me that there has been a giant demand for larger cups, and they are expecting to offer up to a G cup by September. It helps that Ms. Hassan’s own sister wears a G cup!
I can’t wait to be able to try on one of these lovelies in my size but for now I can take advantage of the panties and hosiery. What Nubian Skin has gotten so right is capturing the rich undertones in our skin. I tried the Cafe’ au Lait hold ups on over my hand and they seemed to just melt into my skin offering just the slightest hint of a shimmer. I am so looking forward to strutting around NYC in these!
Its about time someone gave us “a different kind of nude” and I must say that Nubian Skin certainly seems to have gotten it right. I’ll be keeping my eye on this brand and letting you all know when they expand the cup size beyond DD.
Bravo Ms. Hassan!
