I don’t think I have to remind everyone of how insanely cold it’s been. Although I’ve been a New Yorker for 17 years or so, I am originally from Michigan, and even for a girl used to waiting for the school bus with frozen nose hairs, this has been a bit much!
Now I will be the first to say that when it comes to dressing for cold weather , I usually couldn’t care less about looking fashionable. You’d typically find me bundled up with a few layers along with gloves that don’t match my hat that doesn’t match my scarf that doesn’t match my unflattering puffy coat. As a young Michiganian we are taught to dress for the weather. Fashion be damned!
Until recently, I held on to that belief. Every winter I’d get a big ole puffy coat and because of my large bust, I’d have to buy a bigger size making me look, well, ginormous. This year I had to find a way to stay warm while running in the bitter cold without the bulk. Remember being a kid and trying to run around and play in a snow suit? Yeah, that’s what it feels like to train for a winter race in my usual puffy coat. Luckily for me, I have a husband that listens when I complain and tries to come to my aid post haste. I am sure this is partially because of his undying love for me and the rest because he doesn’t want to hear my complaining. Whatever the reason, he still will buy clothes for me, using his “knowledge” (wink wink) of my body shape/size and his best judgement.
Ladies, here is his latest purchase. Puffy-coat perfection!
This coat is amazing! It is a thinner version of my typical puffy-coat and it is cut to still show a little curve. The best part, though, is that it has really great boob space! Usually I’d expect to be completely pancaked by this type of coat, but this one gives me room for the girls. It has a special inner lining that basically keeps your body heat in without being suffocating. It is amazing when I’m running in the cold because they figured out a way to still make it “breathable” and fashionable enough to serve as my “everyday” winter coat. I also love the color. It’s not too bright but is feminine and flirty. My husband chose it because it’s the shade of pink that the women in my running club wear (he gets bonus points for remembering that).
If I had been in the store, I probably wouldn’t have tried this on and because of my bust size, I surely wouldn’t have tried on a large. Because I’ve had so many issues with winter coats in the past, I would have assumed this beauty wouldn’t fit, sighed and moved on. I’m learning that sometimes it takes someone who knows us and our needs to just throw clothes at us, tell us to try it on and close the door. It probably won’t fit, but then again it just might.
Great job, Husband!
It’s perfect! What model it is?
I like the color on you and the fit is a galaxy better than what you usually expect from this kind of coat.
Thanks! It’s the Mighty Lite III Jacket by Columbia. It retails for $110.
This is gorgeous!!! If I needed a winter coat I’d snatch this up in a heartbeat. And it’s even more awesome that your husband picked it out!!
I live in California now, but growing up in Missouri I was all about the puffiest winter coats and whatever mismatched gloves/hat/scarf/socks I could find! Whenever I visit cold places I still have that same mentality – it’s hard to realize that “warm” can also be “stylish”!
I went to Paris (France) just before Christmas. Puffer coats and vests were quite popular there this year for both men and women. However, they were all either fitted around the waist (women’s) or seamed so that the puffy areas were narrower and therefore less puffy (women’s and mens). I didn’t see any of the “Mrs. Snowman” type puffer coats that you see in the U.S.. I thought it was a great example of how the details of a garment can make it look more or less flattering.
Yours looks great!
odd that in Michigan you are being taught to dress for the weather but nevermind fashion if it’s cold! We experience severe cold weather for months every year and even puffy coats are made stylish as well as sporty. As farmfashionista says the coats are fitted around the waist, often come with a belt, can have a-line hems to make it skirt like and colors / patterns are used to make them different from the parka style coats that are leisurewear coats – or the down puffy coats that just drown any body.
I do love the look of your coat as it’s a wonderful color and fits nicely, only surprised to hear that puffy coats that flatter the figure are hard to come by. Here those are easy to find but wool coats that flatter the busty are difficult to find.
