I’m reading Service Included, by Phoebe Damrosch, about her experience as a backserver and captain at the restaurant Per Se. She gives a dining tip at the end of each chapter. Here’s her tip at the end of the third chapter:

making enough space for it. There should be at least
ten inches in front of you that are free of:
hands
elbows
silverware
bread plates
teacups
wineglasses
and ample bosoms
