Last month, I relayed to you the explanation (from Tiffany Berrier of Chantelle) of why there are no pretty D+ racerback bras to go under summer dresses:
- Racerback bras require front closure.
- Full busts need the center gore to tack (stay flat) between breasts to anchor the bra to the body.
- With so much pressure on this center anchor, a front closure wouldn’t stay closed.
After speaking to Tiffany, I passed this bra at the Zinke exhibit (this photo is complements of the Forty Winks blog).
Wouldn’t multiple hooks like this in front keep a D+ racerback bra from popping open? Or would there be an issue with fitting the underwires in? I would love it if bra company engineers would play with this and make it work . . . and then for the designers to create color blocks like this Zinke bra! What do you think?
Have you ever tried those clips that pull the straps together? I never have. I don't believe they "add a cup size" like some of them advertise, but it could work for a bra.
Plus, my Freya Active sports bra is a racerback style. I'm sure it's possible. Just no one has been brave enough to do it. Maybe I should learn how to sew my own bras and make one. Haha, yeah right. I'll stick to quilts.
I've tried clips (which is how you mostly do over here, whatever bra size you are). It does not add cup size, how ever it angels the cups into a more push up/plunge shape which means that a bra that is just a bit too small actually can fit. Because of the later I actually used to turn old too small bras to racerbacks and halterneck-bras just so that I could wear them some more time.
That sort of hook and eye closure would require the underwires to be farther apart than usual, so the bra would only work for wide-set breasts.
I think a racerback bra definitely can work, with the closure in the back. The keyhole design some sports bras have could easily be adapted to everyday bras.
That's great to know about the slightly too small bras!
I have some bras which have the straps that you can criss cross on the back. That would give more shoulder exposure. Although, I don't know how you're supposed to get it on as it's a back opening bra, LOL. I guess you could have someone cross them for you, if you have someone near by, LOL.
I am dying for someone to make a racer-back for large cup sizes. We can put a man on the moon but we can’t make a comfortable, supportive bra.
Or cure the common cold! 🙂
