Best Breasts Forward: The Goal Is Not Perfection

When you have to write about such a personal thing as being big busted, especially as a mother of daughters knowing that they’ll read it, it forces you to confront yourself.

As a J cup, my breasts are an unavoidable part of many conversations. What brought me to Hourglassy was seeing my youngest daughter’s reaction to MY reaction while looking at myself in the mirror. Watching my daughters negotiate life, I’ve learned that my imperfections ARE my perfections.

Particularly because I am a busty woman, I am conscious of what I wear. I let my youngest help me pack for a recent business trip. I knew I’d been doing something right when she reminded me to “take my good bras”. She said to wear my “pretty” scarf. She said I should wear my beige Pepperberry jacket (that I got at the swap).

My daughters don’t see me as perfect and because of that, they find it easier to embrace their flaws. When Mommy took her 6-year-old to the beach, she didn’t blink an eye when I took off my maxi dress to reveal my bikini. She just wanted me to build a sandcastle with an impressive moat.

sand castle vs perfection

For me, that is and will always be the point. I’ll never be society’s version of “perfect” and through my writing and talking with my daughters, I’ve learned that’s for the best.

I have a 23-year-old and a 6-year-old daughter. When they are with me, there is no judgment.  I’m the me I need to be for them . . . imperfections and all.

Best Breasts Forward ~ Busty & The Beach: Curvy Kate Luau Love

I’ve been wanting to try a Curvy Kate bathing suit ever since I saw them at Curve. I can’t thank them enough for providing me with one to review.

I chose the Luau Love padded balcony bikini in Flamingo (34J) and the coordinating high waist brief (size 12).

Of course I was immediately attracted to the color. It’s a gorgeous pink that compliments my skin tone. I have to be careful with pinks because if they fall closer to a hot, neon pink they tend to make my skin look slightly orange, like I’ve gotten a bad spray tan.

The fit of the top is extremely comfortable. The padding in the cups is just thick enough so that there is certain to be no nipple showing through but thin enough not to make my J’s look even bigger than they actually are. My breasts fit into the cups nicely with only a slight looseness on the sides and due to the support of the band there is very little pull on the straps. My breasts do seem to push the band down a bit in front, but this is because I prefer a looser band in swimwear. When ordering, be sure to stick with your usual band size of you prefer a tighter fit. I choose to sacrifice a bit in proper fit to have a little less back fat.

The high waisted brief is a strange fit for me. I am shorter in the waist so the top hits me just above my navel. I’m still trying to decide if I like that or not. Keep in mind that I’m feeling a little chubby these days so my criticism is partly me not loving my body shape right now. It’s probably best not to try on swimwear during your “cycle”. For some reason the brief also feels a little thin to me. I may just have to get used to wearing a suit that isn’t black without any pattern.

For women of the higher cup sizes I definitely recommend trying a Curvy Kate suit. It gave me the opportunity to focus on what the suit actually looked like because it was so comfortable I didn’t have to worry about falling out or tugging on straps.
I can build a sandcastle with my daughter and concentrate on having fun instead of having the girls falling out.

Best Breasts Forward ~ Busty & the Beach: Freya In The Mix

One thing that I’ve learned while being a writer for Hourglassy is to never count a brand out.

When I first received my In The Mix Freya bikini I thought I’d hate it. In the past I haven’t had much luck with Freya bras so I assumed the worst when the bikini arrived.

I was so wrong!

There is something so absolutely cute about this bikini top. It may not be the most supportive but the fabric is soft and comfortable without being too thin and showing nipple. The ruffle on the edge doesn’t draw attention to the breasts as much as you’d think. It’s a flirty accent.

The band is very comfortable and if you prefer a regular strap as opposed to a halter, it is convertible.

The primary thing that I’ve learned from trying this suit is to never count out a brand. I may not have found my perfect Freya bra but I’ve definitely found a great Freya suit.

Best Breasts Forward ~ Busty & The Beach: Tara Grinna Swimwear

I must admit that I was a bit nervous having someone else choose a suit for me for this week’s column. After speaking with Lizzy at Lion’s Lair I was completely put at ease. This woman knows what she is doing!

Lizzy chose this top (FT-142) $92 and the Retro Styled High Waisted Skirted Pant from Tara Grinna for me. Both pieces are available in a variety of colors but I chose black.

The first thing I noticed before putting on the suit was the sizing. The top is a 32-36F. This made me a little nervous but trusting Lizzie as I’ve learned to do, I didn’t fret.

Being that I chose a basic black suit, the small details of the suit really stand out. I love the heavyweight, silver details and the double strap.

The fabric is soft and comfortable. I don’t feel like the girls are going to try escaping out of the top but I still feel sexy. This is no old lady swimwear! The design of the top adds to its support. The cups have a secondary layer of fabric that criss crosses the bust adding support and creating a gorgeous flare. However this is not a suit for running or beach volleyball. There is considerable bounce.

I love the design of the bottoms but unfortunately the size 10 I received is a tad bit small. I will be keeping them for later in the summer when I’ve lost a bit of pudge.

I’d definitely recommend Tara Grinna swimwear. Although it is a bit pricy, the style, fit and detail make this a suit that I could wear for a couple years and still feel fashionable.
